Marcel Hensema

Marcel Hensema is celebrated as one of the Netherlands' most accomplished actors. Fluent in five languages, Hensema has appeared in over 70 films and TV productions across the Netherlands and internationally. He was awarded a Dutch Academy Award (Golden Calf) twice: for Best Actor in the feature film Wild Romance (2007), and for Best Supporting Actor in Knielen op een bed violen (2016). He was nominated again for Best Actor in 2014 for his role in the acclaimed TV series Hollands Hoop, and in 2015 for his performance in the award-winning film Bloed, Zweet & Tranen.

Hensema is known for some standout television roles, starring in acclaimed Dutch drama series like Anoniem (2023-), De Stamhouder (2023), Hollands Hoop (2014-2020) and Penoza (2010). He also appeared in the Netflix production Tokyo Trial (2016) and Videoland series Sphinx (2024), directed by Diederik van Rooijen.

On the big screen, he starred in multiple award-winning films such as the De Marathon (2012), the moving historical drama Sonny Boy (2011) and Simon (2004), winner of 4 Dutch Academy Awards (Golden Calf).

The upcoming Netflix thriller iHostage, directed by Bobby Boermans, is set for release soon. Starring Marcel Hensema in the lead role, the film centers on the gripping hostage situation that took place at the Apple Store in Amsterdam in February 2022.

In theater, he performed with, among others, Toneelgroep Amsterdam, Het Toneel Speelt, Theatergroep Hollandia, Toneelgroep Oostpool, Het Nationale Toneel, and Noord Nederlands Toneel. With the Noord Nederlands Toneel, Hensema created the solo trilogy Mijn Ede, Mijn Tweede, en Mijn Vrede, for which he received multiple awards. He has performed various solo pieces, like Alles in de Hens, which toured theaters across the country.

Currently, Marcel is touring in Germany with the solo show Carrell – Showmaster Ist Mein Beruf and from mid-January to the end of March, he will be touring in the Netherlands with the solo show Eldorado.

Renowned for his versatility, Hensema moves effortlessly between film, television, and theater, embodying a wide range of characters with remarkable adaptability. In addition to his acting, he has also directed several films.
